The Best Roll of 120 I Have Ever Shot: Bridget on Lookout Mountain
I have shot a lot of medium format. That roll might be the best one I have ever gotten back.
Not one unusable frame in twelve. Twelve. Every single one came back sharp and warm and right, a rarity for film. Bridget's session was on Lookout Mountain in high summer, mostly on 120 with a handful of digital frames around it, and something about the haze and the hour and the way she moved just agreed with the film. She brought her family to make this session extra special as they prepared to welcome a new member to the household. I’m the only photographer in Denver shooting maternity on film, check out more of what I do on my film page.
It was also a genuinely family session. Her toddler was in half of it and was, objectively, adorable. At one point I pulled her husband and her son aside and shot a frame of just the two of them, which was not on the plan and is now one of my favorite things in the gallery. Maternity sessions get sold as being about the mother, and they are, but the best ones make room for the fact that she is not doing this alone.
Medium format costs you something. Twelve frames a roll, no chimping, no second chances on a toddler's attention span. What you get back is a negative with more information in it than any file I can make, and grain that reads as texture instead of noise.
