A Doula in Front of the Camera: Briauna’s Signature Spot Session
She has talked other women through labor. She still asked me twice what to do with her hands.
Briauna is a doula. Her whole job is being the steady person in the room while somebody else does the hardest thing they have ever done. She was on her second pregnancy when we shot, and she told me up front that she was hesitant. Not about the idea. About being the one in front of the lens. Knowing exactly how birth works turns out to do nothing for how you feel when a camera comes up.
So we took it slow. June, early summer, out at the location I only share with booked clients, everything still green and the light running long into the evening. I shot her on digital and on 35mm film. Somewhere in the first ten minutes she stopped managing the session and started being in it, which is the turn I wait for. By the end she was the one pitching ideas! Lace, a cute tank top, and fresh wildflowers gave us some Colorado magic.
She saw the gallery and fell for it immediately. That part never gets old.
