Some moms want their pregnancy photographed where they live. Some want it photographed where the trip is.

I have shot a fine art studio in New York City, a waterfall in the Oregon Cascades, red sandstone outside Las Vegas, the cliffs at Big Sur, a Gulf sunset in Florida, and a mile of empty sand on the southern Oregon coast. The approach does not change with the zip code. Same camera, same light, same hour of you not knowing what to do with your hands until suddenly you do.

Traveling for this is not a splurge on logistics. It is the difference between portraits made at the place that means something to you and portraits made at the place that was convenient.

If your favorite spot on earth is twenty minutes from your house, book me for a regular session and keep the airfare. I mean that. But if it is a thousand miles away and you are already going, bring me.

The California Coast

Monterey and Big Sur sit twenty miles apart and photograph like two different states. Monterey gives you coves, kelp, and cypress bent flat by a hundred years of wind, all of which you can shoot into instead of around. Big Sur gives you cliffs that drop straight into the water and fog that shows up on its own schedule.

Big Sur is the one place on this page I would tell you to build a whole day around instead of an hour. The good light moves and the pullouts are not close together.

The Oregon Coast

The southern Oregon coast is the easiest place in the country to photograph a pregnant woman, and I say that as a Colorado native who does not hand out compliments to other states. Sea stacks, creeks running straight across the sand, and a soft overcast that does the work of expensive diffusion for free.

Whaleshead Beach sits about seven miles north of Brookings in the Samuel Boardman corridor, named for the rock offshore that spouts spray when the surf hits it right. It is a mile of sand that stays empty even in summer, which for this work matters more than almost anything else. Florence is the same coastline a hundred and fifty miles north, close to three hours up the 101, and it trades the sea stacks for dunes.

Florida

The Gulf gives you the sunset everyone is picturing when they say they want beach photos. Flat water, no cliffs, and a horizon that goes orange for a long time instead of a fast twenty minutes. It is the most forgiving light I shoot all year, and Sarasota is the only coast where I will tell a mom at 34 weeks that she can stand in the sand for an hour and be fine.

Hawaii

Kauai is the greenest place I have ever put a camera. Ridgelines that go vertical and stay green all the way up, red dirt that gets on everything, and more rain than any of the other islands, which is exactly why it looks like that.

The hard part in Hawaii is never the light, it is the wind. Trade winds turn a long dress into a co-star, which is either the best thing that happens all session or a fight, depending on how we plan the hour. Plan for it and it is the best thing.

New York City

The only indoor destination session I do, and the one that surprises people. A fine art studio in New York City, four walls and controlled light, a thousand miles from anything that looks like Colorado.

No weather to plan around, no drive time, no golden hour to chase. I start with a completely black frame and build the light up from there, same as I do in Denver, except you are in a city you actually wanted to be in. If you are in New York for a reason and have three hours, this is the whole session.

Las Vegas

Fifteen miles west of the Strip the ground turns red and stays that way. Red Rock Canyon is Mojave sandstone stacked into an escarpment, and next to skin it reads warm in a way no coastline on this page does. It is the one desert chapter here and it does not look like anything else.

Nobody books a maternity session for Las Vegas. They book Las Vegas for something else and then find out the canyon is twenty minutes from the hotel.

The Oregon Cascades

Six hours inland from that coast and it is a different state again. The Cascades north of Bend are high desert going green, cold earlier in the fall than anyone expects, and full of water falling over rock.

Erin wanted a location as adventurous as she and her husband are, so we found a waterfall near their hometown and shot her there. A few frames went on medium format film. Those are the ones she still talks about, and I have not argued with her about it.

How this actually works.

You tell me the place and roughly when. I look at sunrise and sunset for those dates, the season, and what is likely to be blooming, melting, or crowded, and I come back with the two or three windows worth shooting.

The studio closet does not travel, so wardrobe planning happens further out and we build the looks around what you can actually get on a plane. I will tell you exactly what to pack.

Everything after the shoot is the same as a session here. Same gallery, same selects, same delivery.
